Someone asked me recently "What makes a successful role-play?" This Forum will help those who get "blocked" discover what causes that and how they can regain their story in order to better empower role-play and make it even more fun!
Some things you should always know up front:
1) The back story for your character: If you are starting a new character and don't have a clue where they came from, what caused them to have whatever attitude they have and who they are inside... Then You should probably figure that out! It's so important to have all the information on your character as you can possibly have. It needs to engage other players and it gets them guessing what makes your character tick.
2) Know your surroundings: I don't know how many times I've gone into various rooms where people didn't even know who the room leader was or how their room was actually played. In White wolf for instance - there are several rules and different clan bloodlines you should know. - Not to mention if there are story-lines going on in the room , you need to be informed. Usually there are forums On each and every single room, STUDY THE FORUMS!
3) Study the forums: I know you're anxious to get to playing , but as I previously stated it's so important to the role-play to know what's going on around you! If you walk into a room and say "Joe schmo walks into a bar sits down and decides to cuss out the guy next to him" How on earth do you plan to know weather the guy next to you is a blood sucking vampire that might be your destruction within a manner of seconds...
4) Don't forget the meat! Oh Gosh okay so this is a pet peeve of mine, I'll write a huge ass post that asks at least 4 questions , or comments to the other player and then get a one line response back. They spend too much time focused on their own story to even realize they are leaving you hanging to where you have only a one line response yourself at that point, then you have to pull story-lines out of your ass Not fun! (THE ONLY TIME it's acceptable to leave a one question line in RP is if you are just starting out in the story- So if you're writing your entrance post that's fine... if it's any post after that - it's uncool lol)
5) Don't leave your partner hanging... Create a storyline! If you notice someone else is putting forth 100 percent of the story , it might mean you're leaving them out to dry. Which they may as well be playing alone. If you can't think of a storyline then you probably don't have that great of an imagination - If you struggle in that department (watch some movies or read a book for inspiration!) that doesn't mean copy it straight from the book , but use it to gather thoughts and idea's. I find that if you're not like me and unable to just pull off random thoughts at various moments, then taking idea's down on a piece of paper sometimes helps to rectify that.
6) Talking in the first person- NO! Don't do that! It drives me nuts when people say "I went into the room and I was feeling frisky" NO NO NO NO NO! Please don't say it like that. There is nothing more annoying. You are not that character! You are the writer, telling a story about the character. Use "He walked into the room , feeling more then frisky when he caught a glimpse of her standing by the door." To me this is an important factor.
7) Be informed: If a room doesn't have a forum with information on the room, then ask one of the people who play there to give you the low down. If there is no room controller available - if you just search someone is usually willing to help you out by explaining the concept, but be patient if their in the middle of an RP themselves.
8) If no one is in a room and you want more information on that realm, then there are informative websites all over the Internet that you can study and learn from.
9) Get creative and have fun!
